Alipay vs. WeChat Pay: Which Should a Foreigner Set Up First?

A practical comparison of Alipay and WeChat Pay for foreign cards, merchant QR codes, restaurant mini programs, refunds, local services and payment backup in China.

Set up Alipay (支付宝, Zhifubao) first, then add WeChat Pay / Weixin Pay (微信支付, Weixin Zhifu) as a backup. Alipay is easier to think of as a travel and payment tool. WeChat (微信, Weixin) is also the communication layer used by hotels, guides, restaurants and mini programs. Their payment coverage overlaps, but the surrounding jobs are different.

Do not choose one and delete the other. Two wallets linked to the same card are not two financial backups. Add a second card and keep some RMB cash as well.
Need Better first choice Reason
Basic merchant payment Alipay Clear travel-oriented setup and broad payment use
Messaging a hotel or local contact WeChat Chat and payment live in the same ecosystem
Restaurant or attraction mini program It depends The merchant may have built the service for one ecosystem
Payment backup Both A merchant or mini program can behave differently in each app

What “works with a foreign card” really means

Both services support linking eligible overseas cards, but the issuing bank still authorizes the transaction. A card can link successfully and later fail at a particular merchant or mini program. Test a small purchase after landing before relying on a large hotel deposit or train booking.

Where Alipay feels simpler

  • Payment is the main job, not one feature inside a messaging app.
  • Travel services are easier to discover for many first-time users.
  • It gives you a useful route into transport and local-service mini apps.

Where WeChat becomes necessary

  • A hotel, host, guide or driver asks to communicate through WeChat.
  • A restaurant’s ordering code opens a WeChat mini program.
  • A local contact sends a location, booking detail or service account inside chat.

Test both without creating confusion

  1. Register each with a number you will keep active.
  2. Complete any requested identity checks.
  3. Link at least one card; ideally keep another network or issuer available.
  4. Learn the difference between scanning a merchant’s code and showing your own payment code.
  5. Turn on transaction alerts from your bank.
  6. Save the support route and check where refunds appear.

FAQ

Will every Chinese QR code work in both apps?

No. Some are merchant payment codes; others open a mini program built for one ecosystem.

Can I split a large payment?

Ask the merchant first. Never split a payment merely to bypass an app warning or verification request.

What if both wallets use the same foreign card?

A bank decline can affect both. Carry another card and cash.
