“Shanghai station” is not enough. A city can have a central station, a north station, a south station, a west station, an airport-linked station, and a suburban station whose English name looks almost identical at a glance. Your train leaves from the station printed on the ticket, not the station that seems most central.
Check these five items the night before
- Departure city and full station name.
- Chinese station name, including the final character 站, meaning station.
- Train number and departure time.
- Travel time from your hotel at the hour you will actually leave.
- Which entrance or drop-off level is useful for your ticket and luggage.
Common pairs that visitors confuse
- Beijing Railway Station, Beijing South, Beijing West, Beijing North, and Beijing Chaoyang.
- Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai South, and Shanghai West.
- Shenzhen, Shenzhen North, Shenzhen East, Shenzhen West, and Futian.

Give the driver the station, not the city
Open the station from the booking order or a reliable map and show the Chinese name. If using DiDi, compare the selected pin with the Chinese departure station before confirming. Large stations can have separate north and south squares; the wrong square may add a long walk, but the wrong station can cost the whole journey.

Build a time buffer around the station
Allow for traffic, security screening, passport checks, a large waiting hall, and a gate that closes before departure. A 25-minute drive estimate is not permission to leave 30 minutes before the train.
If you arrive at the wrong station
- Do not enter a random security queue. Show staff the ticket and ask whether the train departs there.
- Check the time needed to reach the correct station by taxi and metro.
- If you cannot make it, open the official 12306 order and look for a same-day change.
- If the app route is unclear, go to the ticket-change window with the original passport.
- Keep the original order until the change or refund is confirmed.

Can I board the same train at another station?
Only if that station is an intermediate stop on the booked route and the railway rules allow it. A different station in the same city is not automatically interchangeable.

Can a taxi stop at any entrance?
