In many hotel rooms, the key card does two jobs: it opens the door and activates most of the room’s electricity. Remove it, and the lights, air conditioner and ordinary sockets may turn off after a short delay.

Some rooms have one always-on socket marked 不间断电源, 常电 or with a charging symbol. Others keep the minibar socket powered. Do not unplug hotel equipment to create a charging point without asking.
Run a two-minute test
- Plug in a low-risk device such as your phone charger.
- Check that it is charging.
- Remove the room card and close the door as if leaving.
- Wait two minutes.
- Return and check whether charging continued.
Do not defeat the system
Travelers sometimes insert a bank card or folded paper into the power slot. Do not do this. The slot may read the hotel card electronically, improvised objects can jam it, and leaving cooling or heating running against hotel rules wastes energy. Ask reception for a second room key when two registered guests need separate access.
Devices that should not be left unattended
- Power banks and damaged charging cables.
- Travel kettles, heating devices and hair tools.
- Battery chargers that become hot.
- Medical equipment unless you have confirmed a reliable power arrangement.
If electricity is medically necessary, tell the hotel before arrival and again at check-in. A normal guest-room socket is not a substitute for a verified backup-power plan.
