Brian’s take: Shenzhen looks simple on a map, but first-time visitors often mix up the airport, high-speed rail stations, and Hong Kong border routes. Your first 72 hours should make those routes boring and clear.
This is not a shopping or restaurant guide. Shenzhen’s first-arrival problem is usually practical: airport or border route, mobile data, payment, hotel address, meeting address, and whether your plan touches Hong Kong.
Before arrival
- Confirm whether you are arriving by airport, high-speed rail, or Hong Kong border crossing. These are very different first-hour experiences.
- If flying, check for Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (深圳宝安国际机场, Shenzhen Bao’an Guoji Jichang, SZX). Do not confuse it with Hong Kong International Airport or Guangzhou airports when planning Greater Bay Area routes.
- If arriving by train, confirm the exact station. Shenzhen North Railway Station (深圳北站, Shenzhen Bei Zhan), Futian Railway Station (福田站, Futian Zhan), and Shenzhen Railway Station (深圳站, Shenzhen Zhan) serve different routes and neighborhoods.
- If crossing from Hong Kong, know the port name in Chinese. Common names include Futian Port (福田口岸, Futian Kou’an), Luohu Port (罗湖口岸, Luohu Kou’an), Huanggang Port (皇岗口岸, Huanggang Kou’an), and Shenzhen Bay Port (深圳湾口岸, Shenzhenwan Kou’an). Check current eligibility and opening hours yourself before travel.
- Prepare Mainland China apps. Hong Kong habits do not automatically carry over. Octopus, Google Maps, or Hong Kong taxi assumptions will not solve Shenzhen’s first 72 hours.
First two hours
If you land at SZX
- Before leaving the airport, confirm mobile data and hotel address. Shenzhen is easy when your phone works; awkward when it does not.
- Metro is useful if your luggage is manageable and your hotel is near a station. Otherwise, the official taxi queue or DiDi may be easier.
- For DiDi, be careful with pickup zones. Airport pickup points can be specific. Do not assume the driver can find you from “arrivals” alone.
If you arrive by rail or border
- Check the station or port name before moving. Shenzhen North, Futian, Luohu, and border ports are not just different exits of the same place.
- If crossing from Hong Kong, finish the formalities first, then solve transport. Do not arrange a tight pickup until you know where you will exit.
- Keep your passport and entry documents easy to reach. Border and real-name transport situations are not the place to dig through luggage.
First night
- Save your hotel address and nearest landmark in Chinese. Shenzhen has many new districts, office parks, malls, and hotel branches with similar English names.
- Test payment right after check-in. A convenience store or simple restaurant is the best low-pressure test.
- Ask the hotel where drivers should stop. In Shenzhen, the correct entrance may be inside a mall, office complex, residential compound, or service road.
- If you came from Hong Kong, check whether your mobile data is really working in Mainland China. Do not wait until you are outside with luggage.
First full day
- Use metro for stable point-to-point trips. It is often the cleanest way to understand the city on day one.
- Use DiDi when the pickup point is easy to describe. A hotel lobby or office tower entrance is easier than a border exit or huge station.
- Check meeting locations carefully. A district name alone is not enough; confirm building, tower, floor, and entrance.
- If your trip touches Hong Kong again, plan the border route before leaving. Different ports fit different neighborhoods and times.
Shenzhen-specific failure points
- SZX, Hong Kong airport, and Guangzhou airports are not interchangeable. Greater Bay Area travel can look close on a map but feel complicated with luggage and border rules.
- Shenzhen North and Futian are different rail stations. A wrong station can cost serious time before a train.
- Luohu Port and Shenzhen Railway Station are connected in people’s minds, but your exact exit still matters. Show the Chinese destination.
- Hong Kong apps and payment habits may not cover Mainland China. Prepare Alipay (支付宝, Zhifubao), WeChat Pay (微信支付, Weixin Zhifu), and a Mainland-friendly map route.
- Modern buildings can hide pickup points. Mall entrances, office towers, basement roads, and hotel driveways may all have different names.

Choose based on your first real obligation. If you have a train the next morning, station access matters. If you have meetings, stay near the meeting district. If you arrive late, do not underestimate the value of a simple airport-to-hotel route.
What is different if I come from Hong Kong?
You may be changing not only cities, but also apps, payment habits, mobile data behavior, taxi assumptions, and border timing. Treat Shenzhen as Mainland China setup, not as a small extension of Hong Kong.
