A red light at the railway entrance does not normally mean your ticket is invalid. Foreign passports are read inconsistently by different gates and stations. Stop trying the same scanner, move to the staffed channel, and show the physical passport used for the booking.
First, check which gate you are standing at
There are usually two separate identity checks: one at the station entrance and another at the boarding gate. At either point, look along the end of the barriers for a member of staff or signs such as:
- Manual Channel — 人工通道 (Rengong Tongdao)
- Passport Verification — 护照核验 (Huzhao Heyan)
- Service Desk — 服务台 (Fuwutai)
The staffed lane is often at the far left or far right, but station layouts differ. Do not climb over a barrier or follow another passenger through.
What to show the employee
- Open your booking and show the train number, date, departure station and passenger name.
- Hand over the physical passport used for that passenger.
- If you booked several people, keep each booking matched with the correct passport.
- If the employee cannot find the ticket, show the 12306 order number or the supplier confirmation, not only a screenshot of the price.
我的护照不能通过闸机,请帮我走人工通道。
Pronunciation: Wo de huzhao bu neng tongguo zhaji, qing bang wo zou rengong tongdao.
My passport will not work at the gate. Please help me use the staffed channel.

If the staffed lane still cannot find your ticket
Move away from the gate so you are not blocking the queue. Check these four details:
- Station: are you at the exact station printed on the booking, not another station in the same city?
- Passport: was the ticket booked with an old passport number or a companion’s document?
- Name: does the passenger name match the passport record used by 12306 or the booking platform?
- Status: does the order say issued or confirmed, rather than processing, waitlisted or requested?
If any detail is wrong, go to the staffed ticket office. Search for 售票处 (Shoupiaochu, ticket office) or ask at 服务台 (Fuwutai, service desk). Arrive early enough that a ten-minute identity problem does not become a missed train.
Do you need a paper ticket?
Usually no. China Railway uses e-tickets, and the passport tied to the booking acts as the travel credential. An itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is useful for records, but China Railway says it is not itself a boarding ticket.
Before your next train
- Save the train number and station name in both English and Chinese.
- Keep the booking available offline.
- Use the same passport for booking and travel.
- Go directly to a staffed lane if the machine rejected the passport on your previous journey.
FAQ
Should I keep scanning the passport?
No. After one careful attempt, use the staffed channel. Repeated attempts waste boarding time and can hold up the queue.
What if I renewed my passport after buying the ticket?
Do not assume the new document will match automatically. Contact the booking platform or visit a staffed ticket window before departure.
Can a photo of my passport work?
Do not rely on it. Carry the original document associated with the ticket.
