Can You Return Something You Bought in China?

What the seven-day online return rule does and does not cover, how in-store returns differ, and what receipts, packaging and payment records a traveler should keep.

Do not assume China has a universal seven-day change-of-mind rule for every shop purchase. The widely quoted rule mainly covers goods bought online, by television, telephone or mail, and it has exceptions. An ordinary in-store return may depend on a quality problem, the seller’s posted policy or a separate promise.

Ask about returns before paying for an expensive item. A verbal “no problem” is hard to use after you have left the city. Photograph the policy or keep the chat.

The online seven-day rule in plain English

Eligible distance purchases can generally be returned within seven days from receipt without giving a reason. Exceptions include custom-made goods, fresh or perishable goods, opened or downloaded digital and audiovisual products, and delivered newspapers or periodicals. The product should remain intact; return freight is usually paid by the consumer unless agreed otherwise.

Before leaving a physical shop

  • Inspect the exact item, not only the display model.
  • Test electronics and check voltage, plug and warranty area.
  • Match serial numbers where relevant.
  • Ask whether an unopened change-of-mind return is accepted.
  • Ask whether the refund returns to the original wallet or card.
  • Keep the receipt, packaging, accessories and merchant contact.

If the product is defective or not what was promised

  1. Stop using it if continued use could cause damage or injury.
  2. Photograph the fault and the listing or label.
  3. Contact the seller inside the original platform.
  4. Describe the remedy you want: repair, replacement, return or refund.
  5. Keep the parcel tracking and unpacking evidence for online orders.

The traveler’s timing problem

If you leave China soon, say so at the beginning. A refund to an international card may take longer than the shop’s internal approval. Do not surrender the item without a return receipt or platform record.

FAQ

Can I demand cash when I paid through Alipay?

Refunds normally follow the original channel. Ask how long the wallet and underlying card may take.

Does opening the box cancel every return right?

No universal answer fits every product. Opening can matter for digital media, hygiene goods, value loss and seller policy; a genuine defect is a different issue from changing your mind.

Where can I complain?

Start with the seller and platform. Keep evidence if you use the local 12315 consumer channel or another authority.
