A Chinese railway booking contains several numbers that look equally important when you are tired. They are not interchangeable. Use the train number to find the boarding gate, the carriage number to stand in the right place on the platform, and the seat number only after you board.
The four pieces of information you need

At the main departure screen
- Find your train number, such as G16, rather than searching only by destination.
- Check the departure time and final destination to make sure you have the correct row.
- Read the boarding gate in the last columns. It may appear only after the station assigns it.
- If the screen says 待定 (Daiding), the gate is not yet confirmed. Stay near the screens and check again.
At the boarding gate
Large stations may divide one gate into A and B sides. Your screen might say 12A, 12B or 12A/B. Do not join the longest queue automatically. Confirm the sign above the barrier and listen for the train number.
Boarding may start only shortly before departure. A closed barrier while everyone is seated nearby does not necessarily mean you missed the train. Watch the screen for 正在检票 (Zhengzai jianpiao, now boarding) and 停止检票 (Tingzhi jianpiao, boarding closed).
On the platform
Look for carriage-position markers on overhead screens or the platform floor. Different train formations can use different colored markers, so follow the color shown on the current electronic display, not whichever painted number is closest.
- Large luggage usually goes in the rack at the end of the carriage or in another designated luggage space.
- Do not leave a heavy suitcase blocking the door between carriages.
- If you board the wrong carriage, you can normally walk through the train, but doing it with luggage after departure is awkward.
How seat numbers work
On many high-speed trains, letters A and F are window seats, while C and D are aisle seats; the exact layout changes by train and class. Match the carriage first, then the row number, then the letter. If someone is in your seat, show the booking quietly before assuming either person is wrong.
If your train disappears from the screen
Check whether you are looking at arrivals instead of departures, whether the screen has rotated to another page, and whether your station name is correct. Then ask the service desk immediately. Do not wait until the printed departure time.
