Which map should you use?
Apple Maps
For many iPhone users, Apple Maps is the easiest starting point because the interface is familiar and local data can be more useful than visitors expect. Still compare the Chinese name and address before booking a ride.
AMap / Gaode Maps (高德地图, Gaode Ditu)
Gaode has deep local coverage, detailed entrances, public transport, road conditions, and business listings. The Chinese interface can be tiring, but copying a Chinese address into the search box is often enough to find the right place.
Baidu Maps (百度地图, Baidu Ditu)
Baidu is another strong local map. It is useful as a second opinion when a place, scenic-area gate, or small business is hard to find elsewhere.
Google Maps
Do not use it as your only local navigation source in mainland China. Listings, routes, and coordinates may be incomplete or misaligned. It can still help with broad planning, but verify the final destination in a local map.
Turn an English booking into a usable Chinese destination
- Open the hotel or attraction booking.
- Find the Chinese property name and full address. Trip.com or the hotel’s official page may show both.
- Copy the Chinese address into Apple Maps, Gaode, or Baidu.
- Compare the phone number, district, nearby landmark, and photos.
- Save the pin and screenshot the result.
- Ask the hotel front desk to confirm the pin after check-in.
The building is correct, but the entrance may still be wrong
Chinese stations, malls, hospitals, campuses, apartment compounds, and scenic areas often have several gates. The map may bring you to the correct complex but the wrong side of it.
- Metro exits: save the exit letter or number, not only the station name.
- DiDi pickup: use the app’s suggested pickup point and compare the floor, gate, and road side.
- Railway stations: confirm the exact station name before navigating. “Shanghai Hongqiao” is not the same instruction as a specific entrance to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station.
- Hotels inside malls: ask whether cars stop at the hotel lobby, mall entrance, underground garage, or side road.

How to survive a map failure
