An input box that accepts exactly 11 digits is usually asking for a mainland Chinese mobile number. Adding your country code or deleting digits will not turn an overseas number into one. Before entering anything, work out why the service wants the number.
Four different reasons an app asks

Try the foreign-number route first
- Look for a country-code selector such as +86.
- Check whether the international version of the app supports email login.
- Try the same service inside Alipay or WeChat; the mini program may inherit an already verified account.
- If the app offers Apple, Google or passport login, read what information will be attached before continuing.
When a local number is genuinely required
For a multi-week trip, frequent delivery orders or services that must call you, a mainland SIM may be worth buying. Register it with your own passport at an official operator shop. Keep the SIM active until all refunds, deposits and deliveries are finished.
For a one-off restaurant queue or hotel delivery, ask the front desk or restaurant whether staff can place the order under the business number. Make sure they know a call or SMS may arrive. Do not silently use their number.
What not to attach to a borrowed number
- Your Alipay or WeChat account recovery.
- A railway or airline passenger profile.
- A service holding a refundable deposit.
- A booking you may need to change after leaving the hotel.
- Any account containing passport or bank-card information.
Before leaving China
If you bought a local SIM, change any account that still depends on it before the number expires. Save receipts and order numbers independently. A refund can take longer than the trip itself, and losing the login number can make support much harder.

Can an eSIM provide the required number?
Many travel eSIMs provide data only. Check whether the plan supplies a real mainland number and can receive ordinary SMS and calls.
Can I enter my hotel’s landline?
Not for SMS verification. For a delivery contact, ask the hotel first and put your room number in the address or order note.
Why did one mini program accept my number while the full app did not?
